Faculty and Academics of National Law University and Judicial Academy

The faculty at National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam is an experienced lot. We have professors who have done their LL.M.s from top notch NLUs of the country and have won several scholarships as well. Other than the permanent faculty we have regular visiting faculty from the practicing advocates of Guwahati High Court.

We also have regular guest lectures of professors from all across the country, certificate courses, seminars, workshops and conferences at regular intervals. There is always something, or the preparation for something, going on in the campus.

Student Culture and Activities at National Law University and Judicial Academy

There is a scope for every kind of extra – curricular activity in National Law University and Judicial Academy. The students, despite facing a lack of infrastructure for sports, are very prompt in playing sports. Every evening the campus is abuzz with badminton, cricket and football going on in different parts of the campus.

There is Student Bar Council which has an Executive Body comprising of the President, Vice – President, General Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer. There are ten committees to look after the various facets of Law School Life at National Law University and Judicial Academy which include – Mess and Hospitality, Student Welfare, Hostel and Campus Welfare, Sports, Academic, Moot Court, Literary and Debating, Cultural, Internship Co-ordination and Placement Co-ordination which have representatives from all the batches and there is a Convenor for each committee respectively.

Other than the official committees, there is an unofficial ‘Art Collective’ which organizes events like movie – screenings, karaoke nights, food fests, poetry recitations et al on – Saturday evenings.

Last year, National Law University and Judicial Academy organized its inaugural cultural and literary fest ‘Aduj’ and 1st Dr. Gurjeet Singh Memorial National Moot Court Competition, named after the late founding Vice – Chancellor of National Law University and Judicial Academy.

This year, National Law University and Judicial Academy is set to host its inaugural Sports fest ‘Abhiveera’ in the month of March.

Despite the lack of facilities, the zeal of the students regarding extra – curricular has not gone down by even a percent.

National Law University and Judicial Academy is located in North Guwahati near IIT Guwahati. The campus was inaugurated on the 25th of March, 2017 so, it is a fairly new campus. The connectivity is an issue at times because of the out – skirts location of the college. Public transportation is good till around 7:00 – 8:00 PM but after that it is not a feasible option. Cabs are easily available though.

The Placement records are not something that National Law University and Judicial Academy can boast of. Most of the students go into litigation or pursue higher studies. Off – campus and Pre – Placements Offers are the sole way to secure a place in the corporate sector.

Administration and Fees

The total fee of B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) Course is around Rs. 9.1 Lakhs inclusive of Hostel Accommodation. The campus is of a residential nature and there is a fully function hostel.

The administration is an issue which is yet to be resolved. The students are very prompt when it comes to organizing events but many a times, get stuck in the paper – works. That is one thing which hampers the growth as there is a lot to do but due to the administration it gets lagged behind.

Tell us about the infrastructure of your college

We recently shifted to the new campus and it has been only a couple of semesters. The old campus was in North – East Judicial Officers Training Institute building which was located at the heart of the city. The new campus is in the Amingaon area which is around 20 kms. From the city. National Law University and Judicial Academy presently comprises of only four building – The Administrative Block, the Academic Block, The Boys’ and The Girls’ Hostels respectively. The second academic block, Library building et al are to come up in the Second Phase of construction.

The students are allotted double bed rooms in the hostels till the 2nd year and single rooms from 3rd year onwards. The hostels are beautiful and the rooms are big and spacious. There is a common room, gymnasium, study room etc. in the hostel buildings.

Best things about your law school

The faculty in National Law University and Judicial Academy is the best thing that a student can get. The faculty is really young and enthusiastic about everything.

This is the sole National Law University to have a Judicial Academy in campus. That will add as a perk for us, as students.

Worst things about your law school

The library just suffices the basic books that are necessary. There are various books on various subjects which are yet to be added to the library.

The administration is very hostile when it comes to certain matters. There are too many administrative staffs and unnecessary hierarchy which is followed.

The Vice – Chancellor of the university has paid no heed to the needs of the students and to the issue of gender equality in the campus is a myth. He, at times, has called the faculty and the students ‘prostitutes.’ Students dress up in ethnic wear whilst meeting him. The attitude is a big problem. The VC is focused in shining the outer face and reputation whereas the students are fighting for their basic rights and amenities which is ignored on a daily basis.
