Cannot Teach Values To People: Madras HC Over Toon Controversy

The Hon’ble Madras high court while hearing the defamatory case against the person who posted a derogatory cartoon on the social platform pronounces that the court cannot inculcate values on people and it is up to the member of the society what ethical standard they want to follow.

The Hon’ble single-judge bench consisting of Hon’ble Justice G. Ilangovan said in this era a new controversy is arising which is toon controversy and any discussion arising from this is a limitation to freedom of speech and expression.

The case attracted the limelight when the petitioner published a cartoon that had the depiction of an incident that took place on October 23, 2017. In the cartoon, he portrayed a burning body of the baby, which was seen by three persons, naked but carrying currency notes to cover some of their parts. The three people were the Superintendent of police, the District Collector, and the Hon’ble Chief Minister.
