Women Continue To Face Threats In Their Matrimonial Homes: Kerala HC Over Increasing Dowry Harassment Cases

The Kerala High Court on 14th July 2021, Wednesday dismissed a pre-arrest bail petition filed by a doctor and his family in a dowry harassment case. The Applicant and his family were accused of harassing his wife and her senile father demanding dowry.

The single Judge Bench of Justice versus. Shircy expressing despair over increasing incidents of dowry harassment quoted that if bail is granted to the Applicant, it will give a wrong hint to the Society at large. The Court remarked that despite taking stringent action on the accused in dowry harassment cases, the attitude of the society doesn’t seem to have changed against married women in the society.

In the instant case, the wife of the applicant contended that she was subjected to physical and mental torture by her in-laws despite being granted gold ornaments, a car, money, and land property as a gift from her parents at the time of marriage. It was also contended by her that her father and brother were grievously hurt by her husband and his family members for dowry.

The public prosecutor on behalf of the complainant further said that her aged father is undergoing treatment for being manhandled by the accused when they came to take her back to their home.
