Tripura High Court ordered SIT Probe on a case regarding women being subjected to public humiliation

The Tripura High Court had constituted a special investigation team in order to probe into the matter where a young lady was subjected to public humiliation and on account of which she committed suicide. The Bench of Chief Justice Akil Kureshi and Justice S. Talapatra, on 6th May took suo moto cognizance of this news item as it was found published in print and electronic media claiming that the video recording of a young married lady in an extremely intimate and compromising position with a man was shown in public.

Further when the public interest petition was being heard, the husband even committed suicide. With regard to the case of woman, the court was informed that the police had registered an F.I.R (in connection with Woman’s suicide) for offences that is punishable under Sections 306, 323 and 354 read with Section 120B of the Indian Penal Code. The investigation in this regard was partly carried out by I.O. under the supervision of the SP of the district.

Considering the investigation that was carried out so far, the court found several deficiencies, and the court was of the opinion to form an SIT. 

Further the court added that the SIT so formed shall carry out the investigation further and place before the court all such papers of investigation for their perusal on the next date of hearing. The Court even stated that the suicide of the husband of the woman which is as such registered as an unnatural death would also form the part of investigation.
