Comedian Munawar Faruqui released from jail; says he has faith in the Judiciary

Comic Munawar Faruqui was finally released from Indore prison on the night of the 4th following an ad-interim bail issued by the Supreme court a day earlier. The comedian was arrested with five others for making objectionable comments about Home Minister Amit Shah and hurting religious sentiments. In a brief video message after he was set free, the 32-year-old comedian stated that he does not want to comment on the case, but that he has full faith in the judiciary that he would get justice.

Following his arrest, on 2nd January the comedian was denied bail thrice by all the courts leading up to the High court. Finally, when he approached the Supreme Court, he was granted ad-interim bail, but there was also another case filed against him in Prayagraj Court for similar charges. This in turn caused a delay in his release as the Indore jail authorities were deciding on his transfer. The Supreme Court had to intervene again staying on the production warrant issued by the Prayagraj Court in Uttar Pradesh.
