HCBA Boycotts Chief Justice’s Court until physical hearings resume

Recently the Punjab & Haryana High Court Bar Association (HCBA) passed a unanimous resolution calling for the transfer of Chief Justice Ravi Shanker Jha to another High Court. This was due to the Chief Justice calling for only virtual hearings in the High Court and not physical ones. The HCBA claimed that the closure of the court is taking away the livelihood of Lawyers and other persons related to the legal field. Since all other sectors of the economy such as Movie Theatres, Primary Schools, Universities are functioning, then why can’t physical courts be conducted?

The HCBA also removed Advocate General Atul Nanda from the council for continuously acting against the interest of the Association. The Bar Council has termed the HCBA’s decision to remove AG Nanda from its membership as arbitrary and extremely unfair. The decision taken by the HCBA was also in violation of its own rules, particularly Rule 10 (d) and Rule 11. As of now, all members of the HCBA are in favour of the immediate physical opening of the courts.
