Salve says to SC: Breach of privilege motion case against Arnab

Supreme Court bench led by Chief justice S. A. Bobde said that notice should be issued to the Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly, in the case where Arnab Goswami, Editor-in-Chief of Republic Media Network has challenging the breach of privilege motion against him by the Assembly & Legislative Council. A case was filed against Goswami by Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik. He accused Goswami of using derogatory language against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and NCP president Sharad Pawar in relation to alleged inaction by the state government in the case pertaining to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

Today Senior Advocate Harish Salve, appearing for Goswami, said that notice should be issued to the Speaker of the House. Also Senior Cousnel Dushyant Dave appearing for the Speaker said about the notice that it  is not required because at first it must be decided whether there is contempt or not.

The bench said that- “the request is only to serve the Speaker. The bench need not be told what to do. We have not seen the counter affidavit so we don’t want to say anything today. If there is not contempt then all should be discharged and if there is contempt all should be here.”

The court has listed the matter after two weeks.
