Actress Kangana Ranaut under defamation suit over a Tweet

A defamation suit was recently filed against Bollywood celebrity Kangana Ranaut for a recent tweet she made. In the tweet, she compared one of the lady farmers (Mahinder Kaur) to Bilkis Bano, an 82-year-old famous Indian activist who protested against the Farmer Bills and CAA.  The tweet also made false claims that she was available for hire to protest for Rs. 100/-.

The complainant was one of the old farmers who was protesting against the recent Farm Bills. She was there since the beginning of the peaceful protest enduring both the cold winter and police restraint. The false claims made about her not being a genuine protestor by the actress led to her being mocked and ridiculed by her community. The other protestors also started excluding her from the protest since it would devalue their efforts if she joined.

She filed a case under Sections 499/500 (Defamation) of the IPC in the Magistrate Court. She also called for compensation for damages under Sections 357/357A of the CrPC.
