A plea, filed by Sujeet Kumar Singh, a resident of Mirzapur has been put forward in the Supreme Court to ban the popular Amazon web series ‘Mirzapur’. The case was presided by CJI Bobde. The petitioner stated that the web series tarnished the historical and cultural image of the city/district. The show also portrayed every resident of Mirzapur as a “goon, vagabond and adulterer in front of the country.” The show was also filled with nudity, vulgar actions, and dialogues. There were even scenes in which children did obscene acts. The plea seeks for a ban on the sequel, and directions to set up a pre-screening committee for content that is directly released on online platforms. It also calls for censorship of these shows like how movies get censored before being released in theatres. An inquiry has also put up against Excel Entertainment, Amazon Prime Video, including the actors of the web series. This inquiry seeks to get information under the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, Cinematograph Act, and Information Technology Act, 2000.
