Delhi court denies bail to former Congress Councillor Ishrat Jahan

Delhi Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat dismissed the interim bail application of  Ishrat Jahan who was in prison in case relating to Delhi riots which broke out in NCT in February this year.

Ishrat went to court for bail citing COVID-19 cases in Mandoli prison and her other medical issues. The court while dismissing the plea said that-“Considering the gravity of the offences including Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 with which the applicant is charged, the discussion in the preceding paragraphs and the Jail Report, I do not deem it a fit case to grant interim bail to accused Ishrat Jahan.”

Advocate Ramesh Gupta who was appearing for Ishrat also said that she is under mental illness and had cervical, spine injury (lower back pain) and migraine prior to her arrest and she had been under continuous medication in the past for the said illness and also tat around 15 days ago she fell in slippery washroom of the jail and faced spinal injuries.

The opposition advocate opposed this and said citing her latest medical report of June, 2020 which said that she doesn’t need any urgent medical treatment. Opposition also informed the court that- “there is no COVID-19 scare inside the jail. The applicant is also being given proper treatment for her minor health issues and her condition is stable. In fact, she was tested twice for COVID-19 and was found negative.”

And as per the reports of the Jail Superintendent, Tihar Jail all necessary measures are being taken in the jail to avoid and reduce COVID positive cases.
