On Friday, Law minister Kailash Gahlot said, the Delhi Cabinet has approved Rs. 40 crore to provide medical insurance of Rs. 5 lakh and term insurance of Rs 10 lakh to lawyers who are residents of Delhi. Under CM Advocates Welfare Scheme advocates will be insured which was announced by the Delhi Government last year in December.
A corpus of Rs.50 crore is set aside by the AAP government for the welfare of lawyers under the scheme.
Gahlot tweeted, “Honble CM @ArvindKejriwal had last year announced CM Adv Welfare Scheme with an allocated budget of Rs 50 Cr. As a final step towards the implementation of Scheme, Delhi Cabinet on 29.10.20 has approved an expenditure of more than 40.60 Cr for purchase of Life Ins & MediClaim Policies”.
The committee has recommended Rs.5 lakh for the Mediclaim policy and Rs.10 lakh for life insurance cover for each lawyer. Also set up an e-library and crèche facilities in the District courts from the funds.
In November 2019, the CM set up a thirteen-member committee to recommend the utilization of funds for the welfare of advocates, which was headed by Rakesh Kumar Khanna, Supreme Court Bar Association President.
A total of 37,135 lawyers are being registered voters in Delhi and of those 12,098 are on its rolls and have been verified, according to the Bar Council of Delhi.
